The hug between John Kerry and Leonardo DiCaprio you have been waiting for happened today

Um, wow.

Secretary of State John Kerry and actor Leonardo DiCaprio shared a stage Tuesday at the State Department's "Our Ocean" conference -- a gathering highlighted by the Administration's announcement that it would make a large swath of the central Pacific Ocean a marine sanctuary. (WaPo's own Juliet Eilperin broke that news.)

Kerry, introducing DiCaprio, heaped praise on the actor -- saying in part:

He is a terrific example of how an artist, an actor, a person of celebrity can take that celebrity and make it meaningful in the context of things that matter to people’s lives on a day-to-day base, more than being entertained. And he has used it to capture the public’s attention on this particular issue about the oceans.

DiCaprio returned the favor, lauding Kerry's "years of leadership working to protect our oceans."

The two have history. During the 2004 presidential campaign, DiCaprio endorsed Kerry's ultimately successful campaign for the Democratic nomination. "I realize this is the most important election of my lifetime," DiCaprio told a Florida crowd in October 2004. "Over the past four years, George Bush has made the wrong choices, disastrous choices, when it comes to the environment."

It's been a decade since those heady days but, judging from the photo above, the Kerry-DiCaprio bromance remains in full effect.
