Stand With Hillary, a group focused on getting Latino voters and working families excited about the possibility of a Hillary Clinton presidential run, released a music video on YouTube last month. YouTube is basically the debutante ball where all outside groups announce they have arrived, with varied success.
Here is how Stand With Hillary tried to stand out.
As you can imagine we had a lot of questions about this video, which fellow Fix writer Aaron Blake said was "like Eddie Vedder sang a country song with Auto-tune." The big one was : Why? Also, Huh? Among the easier questions to answer: who wrote and sang the first musical entry of the 2016 presidential race? Who is that guy in the cowboy hat?
This was the first political job for the actor starring in the video, although not the first music video. His name is Jason Tobias. He has also appeared in the music video for Ariana Grande and Chris Brown's "Don't Be Gone Too Long."
He said that Stand With Hillary chose him for the video because he looked like a country music star, and that the one-day shoot -- which took place an hour north of Los Angeles in Oxnard, California -- was no different than any other music video he'd done.
Tobias describes himself as apolitical -- although he pays attention to the issues and "isn't one of those people with their head in the sand." He is also not set on standing with Hillary just yet. "If it comes out that Hillary Clinton ends up being the Democratic candidate in 2016, I will look at both candidates running and try to make the best decision possible," he told the Fix Friday.
Tobias is currently working on the Discovery Channel show, "Blood Relatives," a re-enactment show about people who kill family members.
He has also played Jesus.
No, Tobias did not sing the song, and all he knows is that it was sung by someone named "T. Wilson," who did not appear on set.
The song was written by media consultant Miguel Orozco, who started "Stand with Hillary" along with Democratic operative Daniel Chavez. This is not the first campaign music video he helped create. He is not a professional songwriter.
During the 2008 presidential election, he wrote two songs about the Barack Obama campaign. "Viva Obama" has more than a million views on YouTube. He wrote it in two days.
The other was "Obama Reggaeton." Orozco paid for both of the videos, as part of his group "Amigos de Obama," which hoped to reach out to Latino voters before the Texas primaries. Orozco runs the media consulting firm Nueva Vista Media Group.
The songs became so popular that Orozco was invited to perform the song for Obama. According to the Wall Street Journal,
... a field director in the Obama campaign approached Mr. Orozco for permission to play "Como se Dice" during the candidate's appearance at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza in Miami. Mr. Orozco, there to promote his business, didn't demand payment, he says, just a VIP seat during Mr. Obama's speech."After the song played, Sen. Obama shook hands with those in the front row and I had an opportunity to tell him that I wrote the song for him," recalls Mr. Orozco. "He thanked me and asked me for my name." An Obama spokeswoman confirms his account.
We reached out to Orozco and Chavez to learn more about the video, but hadn't heard back by the time this article was posted.
