Since 1980, there are two ZIP codes that have been among the most generous in the country for the presidential candidate of each party every four years. You might be able to guess where they are. If not, we'll give it away: New York City. According to data from the Federal Election Commission, individual donors in ZIP codes 10021 and 10022 -- Manhattan's Upper East Side -- have given Republican and Democratic presidential candidates over $27 million in the last nine presidential races.

At the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Dante Chinni took a look at where candidates can expect to have the best luck rounding up checks. Chinni identified 32 neighborhoods in which a Republican like former Florida governor Jeb Bush might focus, including the two above. But we might suggest that Bush or the other Republicans hoping to be the party's nominee also head to ZIPs 60045 or 75205 -- in north Chicago and Dallas, respectively. Those ZIPs have been among the most generous to Republicans in every single race since 1980 -- but never once among the most generous to Democrats. A tip for Hillary Clinton: Go to 01238 and 20015, ZIPs that gave heavily to the Democrat, but not the Republican, in eight of nine races since then. (That's Harvard and Northwest DC.)

The maps above (which you should zoom in on, probably, by clicking or hitting Ctrl +) show the 50 most generous counties in the country in every election since 1980. Big donor pools appear near cities, understandably, so we've pulled out some of the most generous cities underneath to look at more closely.

But, if you're really hungry for data, here are the top counties by cycle, with the top 20 listed and notes where appropriate.

The first election of Ronald Reagan meant that his home state of California came up big, with counties in Southern California and the Bay Area ponying up. Keep your eye on those little dots in New York City; they'll never not be lit up.

Notice the tiny little spot of blue that pops up in Minnesota on this map. Walter Mondale's people came through, not that it made much difference. California, meanwhile, gave the Democrat a little love.

With Barack Obama on the ballot, areas in Chicago that don't usually give turn blue -- but the areas that are usually red stayed red. In Westchester County, just north of New York City, there was lots of anti-Obama (or pro-McCain) money. In Arizona, pockets of giving for their homestate nominee.

But the whole time, New York City kept giving heavily to both candidates in every race. For candidates, the issue isn't really geography, though hometown support helps. It's where you can consistently find the rich people. And, since 1980, that's been between East 49th and 76th Streets, from Fifth Avenue to the East River.
