Since President Obama took office in 2009, there have been dozens of mass shooting incidents across the United States. In some, the president has taken time to issue a statement or publicly address the tragedy, including the day following the shooting in Charleston, S.C.

The timeline below attempts to capture some of those speeches and statements. There's a repetition to them: a reference to the Bible, an expression of his and the nation's mourning. The sentiment it leaves you with is clear: What else can you say?
