There is a growing movement in the United States to rethink our decision to dedicate a day to Christopher Columbus. And as holidays go, Columbus Day isn't exactly a huge priority for many Americans.

If you're just tuning into this debate, though, a little primer might be in order.

First, the History Channel has a brief recap of how the holiday came to be -- and what Columbus was all about.

Next, CBS "Sunday Morning" in 2012 asked why we still celebrate the holiday.

The below, just posted this week by Canada's Seeker Daily, provides a pretty straightforward recap of the history and politics of the debate.

And TED Ed has its own recap of precisely who Columbus was, putting him "on the stand."
