Oliver's latest effort on Sunday's show -- going in-depth on "special districts" -- will not catch on like those two did. And Oliver knows it. "That's right: Tonight, we are talking about special taxing districts," he said at the outset of the show Sunday. "So, hello, people watching for the first time because of our Trump piece. And also, I presume, goodbye! Goodbye. Thanks for checking in."
He's right. The topic isn't sexy, and it isn't going to get the same kind of pickup as the Trump feature or Oliver's focus on FIFA corruption last year.
But, as with the FIFA piece, this is Oliver at his best -- highlighting an obscure, nonpartisan issue involving alleged government corruption and a lack of accountability in a way both sides are likely to be outraged by. Indeed, if anyone gets upset about what's contained in Oliver's piece on special districts, it's probably fiscal conservatives who concern themselves with government waste.
