On his HBO show this weekend, Bill Maher offered one of the more novel explanations for why Donald Trump is on the verge of winning the Republican presidential nomination: what Maher calls "40 years of worshiping at the altar of self-esteem."

Yes, he says this is what happens when you tell people that the most important thing is to love themselves, when you hand out trophies just for participation and when you don't discipline your kid for kicking the seat in front of him on an airplane.

Maher then plays clips of Trump talking about the various things that he's the best at — building walls, being tough on the Islamic State militant group, loving the Bible, etc.

"He's the white Kanye West!" Maher exclaims.
