Those are pretty vague diagnoses, but the implications are clear: Clinton isn't healthy enough to lead the country. Although Trump has stopped short of naming a specific illness that supposedly afflicts his opponent, his spokeswoman, Katrina Pierson, asserted last week that Clinton suffers from dysphasia, and Trump allies in the media have many other theories about what ails the former secretary of state. So many theories.
To be clear, Clinton does not have a perfect health record — no surprise for someone who has spent decades in high-stress jobs and turns 69 in October. She has hypothyroidism, which hinders the thyroid's production of a hormone that regulates metabolism and can cause fatigue. She takes a prescription blood thinner to guard against clots. She fainted four years ago after becoming dehydrated and suffered a concussion, which temporarily caused double vision. All of this is documented in a letter from Clinton's physician released by her campaign last summer.
But to hear some tell it, Clinton is on her death bed — actually, she should already be dead, according to the National Enquirer, which gave her six months to live last September. Clinton joked about the prediction on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Monday night, asking the host to check her pulse during the interview to make sure she was still alive.
The Washington Post Fact Checker last week awarded Trump (who is 70, by the way) four Pinocchios for his unsubstantiated "stamina" argument, and The Post's David Weigel recently debunked the "junk science" behind some of the leading rumors of a dire, undisclosed health problem. But the extended list of alleged maladies is so long that it borders on comical. Here is The Fix's guide to Clinton's seemingly innumerable diseases and disorders, as diagnosed in the conservative press.
SEAN HANNITY: "What about some of the weird pauses she has, the coughing fits she has? There are moments when I'm literally watching her and I'm thinking, okay, the facial expressions are odd. They seem off."
MARC SIEGEL, FOX NEWS MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT: "Well, I don't know this because I'm only looking at a video, but I saw the same video you saw and I'm wondering about a word called aphasia where you're searching for words, you suddenly lose those words, and that could be the sign, again, of some kind of traumatic brain injury or the after effects of a concussion." "Hillary Clinton was seen wearing an object on her back under her green duster jacket. There's definitely something there. One explanation is that the object is a defibrillator." (Gateway Pundit, Aug. 9)
"Hillary Clinton is hiding MS." (RadarOnline, Aug. 19, 2015)
Obesity, diabetes and hypertension
"And now, as she approaches the BIG SEVEN-ZERO, she is very out of shape. It is a safe bet that her BMI is over 30 — I base that not on having access to her weight but on the dimensions of her posterior and the girth of her ankles — which makes her obese; best casing it, she is at the upper bounds of overweight. With age and obesity comes Type II diabetes and hypertension." (RedState, Nov. 17)
"According to pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli, footage of Hillary Clinton exhibiting bizarre behavior is proof that the presidential candidate is suffering from Parkinson's disease." (Infowars, Aug. 8)
"Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton’s disappearance from the debate stage last month left people speculating that the former first lady took a long bathroom break, but now a law enforcement source with inside connections is alleging that Clinton was missing from the stage due to health issues stemming from a previous brain injury. These long-lasting symptoms stemming from a concussion and blood clot, according to a neurologist, suggest Clinton is suffering from post-concussion syndrome, which can severely impact her cognitive abilities." (Breitbart, Jan. 6)
"Any of you all that were watching the Benghazi hearings had to notice the state of Hillary's health. Especially when she suffered a coughing attack which went on for a few minutes. I say this is her radiation contamination from her many trips to Japan with the Fukushima nuclear disaster. She is showing some signs of the thyroid poisoning related to radiation exposure." (Before It's News, Oct. 26)
"Hillary has at multiple times had convulsions that appear to be seizures on camera." (ZeroHedge, Aug. 9)
"Hillary Clinton recently had a breakdown on TV. The media is of course covering this up rather than having an expert medical panel on to discuss her health. Yet what happened to Hillary was obviously a sign of a head injury and stroke." (Danger and Play, Aug. 6)
"It's beyond obvious something was removed (cut out) from Hillary Clinton's tongue." (Conservative Treehouse, July 31)
Urinary tract infection
"According to a WebMD diagnosis, the 68-year-old Clinton should really check to see if she has a urinary tract infection." (Daily Caller, Dec. 21)
