Much has been made of the symbiosis between politics and memes, which has been particularly visible (if not always successful) over the last few years. But this afternoon, Republicans and Democrats — real adult people, representing America’s interests — took the whole meme thing one step further. The Republican Party doge-d Hilary Clinton. And the Democrats fired back.
.@GOP your memes are as dated as your policies.— The Democrats (@TheDemocrats) June 9, 2014
The Republicans’ tweet, for the record, references a claim Clinton made on ABC News today, when she told Diane Sawyer that her family was “not only dead broke, but in debt” when they left the White House. Critics, many of them Republicans, have pointed out that the Clintons had multiple houses and a multimillion book advance — “she’s been out of touch with average people for a long time,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told AP.
The Intersect cannot rule on that allegation, allegedly, but we can conclusively evaluate the Democrats’ tweet. Per Know Your Meme, an encyclopedia of Internet trends, Doge — the popular image of a Shiba Inu, captioned with oddly funny, ungrammatical interior monologues — peaked in December 2013 and has been on the downturn ever since. So that would theoretically make Republican policies only … six months out of date.
Republicans: 0. Democrats: 0. Try to play nice, kids.
