The stock market opened about an hour ago, and stock for our soon-to-be-former parent company, the Washington Post Company, is up about 6 percent, from $568 at the close of business Monday to more than $600 today.
That suggests the market thinks Jeff Bezos paid significantly more for The Washington Post than the newspaper was worth to its parent company. How much? Well, the parent company's market capitalization is about $4.4 billion. And six percent of $4.4 billion is a bit more than $250 million.
And Bezos paid $250 million for the newspaper. In other words, the market thinks The Washington Post, the newspaper, was worth approximately $0 to its parent company. But maybe Bezos can use his business acumen to increase its value.
