Researchers at MIT have developed tiny cube robots that can self-assemble into different forms without external moving parts. A combination of magnets along the face of the blocks and internal flywheels that can reach 20,000 revolutions per minute help the robots create modular shapes by hopping around and connecting with each other. The researchers hope this kind of modular setup could eventually have transformer-like properties: If robot structure X is great at one task, but not another, it can change over to robot structure Y.
