He reportedly had an argument with housemates over money.
Then Jonuzi packed up his belongings one night last week and prepared to hit the road, but he was allegedly attacked by three housemates on the front lawn, raped and murdered, according to the local newspaper.
Authorities said that the three men — identified in local news reports as 36-year-old Craig Levy, 37-year-old Ryan Smart and 41-year-old Jason Colton — have been charged with murder in the case. The Age reported that Colton is also accused of raping Jonuzi with an unknown object.
The men did not apply for bail Friday during their appearance in court, according to local news reports.
Victoria police said in statement that officers responded to a call on the evening of Oct. 25 about an alleged assault on Alexander Street in Brighton East.
Jonuzi, who was suffering from heart failure, was found in the front yard and rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to BBC News. The cause of death has not yet been released.
A Facebook page matching Jonuzi’s name is filled with messages from people remembering “one of the most genuine, loving guys” and “one of the most pure loving souls ive ever met.”
“I can’t believe that you are gone but I only hope you are at peace and in a better place,” one person wrote. “You’ll be in our thoughts and hearts forever and we will miss you everyday.”
Airbnb said it is “deeply saddened and outraged” by the tragedy.
“The family will have our full support and our hearts go out to them and all of his friends,” a spokesman said in a statement Wednesday to The Washington Post. “We have removed this listing from our platform and will fully cooperate with law enforcement on their investigation. There is no place on Airbnb for such an abhorrent act, which violates everything our global community stands for.”
The Age reported that a review from a woman in August stated she did not end up staying in the house because her door did not lock and she did not feel safe.
In November 2016, a reviewer wrote that the home was not secure and that it had several issues.
“Better way to spend a night, buy a $50 hammer smash your hand with it and go to the emergency hospital,” the guest wrote at the time, according to the Age.
