There is much greater intellectual freedom in China today than several decades ago. But, as I saw during my recent stint as a visiting lecturer at a Chinese university, speech is not completely free. There are real limits to what the government will tolerate, but those limits are often difficult to discern - an ambiguity that may be intentional. The uncertainty affects both Chinese and visiting Western academics.
