Carlos Coronado and Craig Gilbert of Coronado Arts and Crafts Homes wanted to build a house that would capture the view from a crest in the Arlington Ridge neighborhood. By incorporating large panes of glass and several outdoor spaces into the design, they made sure nothing inhibited the enjoyment of the sweeping vista and glimpse of the Washington Monument through the trees.

A strong Swiss influence permeates the European-style contemporary. As you enter the two-story marble foyer, a sculptural metal staircase with its floating African mahogany steps rises before you.

Several types of woods were used in construction of the home, from eucalyptus for the trim, Jatoba Brazilian cherry for the floors, to a mix of maple and cherry for the custom cabinetry in the kitchen and bathrooms.

The abundance of windows and high ceilings give the home a bright, airy feel. The main living space on the second floor opens onto a flagstone balcony through five bifold doors. The centerpiece of the room is an oblong gas fireplace set into a nook-filled wall.

The kitchen is well-suited for entertaining, with two dishwashers, two sinks, a large center island and built-in wine cooler. It also has granite countertops, a built-in espresso maker, a commercial refrigerator/freezer and a five-burner gas range.

The third-floor master suite is an oasis with a balcony, cozy sitting area, his-and-her closets and a master bathroom with an oversize shower and soaking tub.

Instead of a fireplace, the two-story family room on the third floor features a modern version of a pot belly stove that is reminiscent of what would be found in a Swiss chalet. A door in the family room opens to another roomy balcony.

Easily accessible by the elevator that goes to all four levels, the top floor is ideal for outdoor entertaining. A mini-bar kitchenette leads to a spacious roof terrace with an outdoor gas fireplace set into a stone wall.

A second outdoor entertaining space is just off the kitchen. The secluded, terraced garden patio has stone retaining walls.

The five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home is listed at $2.185 million.
