House of the Week | Dupont Circle Victorian for $1.98M

Rowhouses can be dark. Not so in the case of this Dupont Circle Victorian. Its south-facing facade, walls of glass and skylight flood the home with natural light.

“It’s so bright,” said Chuck Holzwarth of Washington Fine Properties. Holzwarth and Stephanie Bredahl are the listing agents. “There’s direct sunlight because of the southern view in front and then tons of light from all the glass in the back of the house.”

Built in 1870, the four-level home has been updated and modernized throughout the years while retaining period details. A large bay window brightens the formal living room and warms the oak floors. The black granite surround and tiled hearth of the decorative fireplace provide a vivid contrast to the ornate wood mantel.

Built-in bookshelves guard the fireplace in the family room, which overlooks the dining room below. A two-story wall of glass paints the room in sunlight.

More light arrives through a skylight that illuminates the oak staircase.

Located on the lower level, the modern kitchen has stainless steel cabinets and a center island. A curved ceiling lends elegance, while radiant-heat floors add warmth. The dining room features sound-limiting wall panels. French doors open to a garden patio and two off-street parking spaces.

The master suite encompasses the entire second floor. The master bedroom is in the front of the house with a balcony that is an ideal spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee. On cold winter nights, a wood-burning fireplace warms the room. Past the his and her walk-in closets is the sitting room or office with built-in shelving. French doors lead to a balcony that looks out onto the back garden.

Two more bedrooms and a fitness room occupy the top level.

On a tree-lined, one-way street north of Dupont Circle, the 3,504-square-foot home is ideally located.

“The nice thing about Hillyer is it’s a very special street,” Holzwarth said. “It’s quiet and very residential, but you are steps off of Connecticut Avenue and everything that Dupont Circle has to offer.”

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home is listed at $1.98 million.
