The second phase of apartments from Gables Upper Rock in Rockville has been completed.
The apartments are part of the Upper Rock District, a joint venture between Gables Residential and the JBG Companies near Shady Grove Road and Interstate 270. It was designed by Andres Duany, designer of “New Urbanism” developments such as Kentlands in Montgomery County, Md., and Seaside in Florida. Once complete, the Upper Rock District will include more than 550 apartments and approximately 40,000 square feet of retail space.
The 127 new apartments by Gables Residential at 30 Upper Rock Circle are a mix of loft, studio, one- and two-bedroom homes with hardwood flooring, granite counters, under-cabinet lighting, stainless steel appliances, plantation-style window treatments and front-loading washers and dryers. The apartments are pet-friendly.
The 18-acre community includes a Zen garden, a bocce ball court, a heated pool, a fitness center, a WiFi café, a game room and a clubroom with a kitchen. A shuttle links the community to the Shady Grove Metro station. The Upper Rock District is close to shops, restaurants, parks and ball fields in the adjacent King Farm neighborhood.
Rents for currently available apartments range from $1,423 to $2,212. The final apartment building in the development is anticipated to open in 2015 and will include a second fitness center, swimming pool and café as well as an outdoor movie theater.

The Premier Apartments in downtown Silver Spring, a 14-story high-rise building at 8711 Georgia Ave., was recently the site of a Hollywood-style grand opening ceremony complete with a red carpet and champagne.
The building, designed by WDG Architects and owned by Guardian Realty and managed by Vantage Management, includes 160 studio, one- and two-bedroom homes. The LEED-certified luxury building is 100 percent smoke free and pet-friendly and offers 24-hour concierge services.

Homebuilders to renovate homeless center
The Home Builders Care Foundation and its HomeAid Washington, D.C. chapter are donating the time, talent and resources of local builders to renovate the Friendship Place Welcome Center at 4713 Wisconsin Ave. NW in Tenleytown, a center that provides a variety of services to homeless people.
Efficient Home LLC is serving as builder captain for the project, which will include reconfiguring the interior floor plan, renovating the kitchen and two bathrooms and replacing the boiler system.
Friendship Center was originally built as a single-family house in 1928 and has approximately 3,000 square feet of space. The center also provides homeless people case management help, medical and psychiatric care, housing and job placement services, shower and laundry facilities, a computer lab and telephone, voice mail and mail services.
The renovation value is estimated at $175,000. The center is owned and operated by Friendship Place, an organization that provides multiple services for homeless individuals and families.
