Affordable senior apartments coming to Brookland

Twenty-five affordable units for people 55 and older are scheduled to be finished by this time next year at Girard Street Senior Apartments at 1545 Girard St. NE in the District’s Brookland neighborhood.

Girard Street Partners, a joint venture of developers Dantes Partners and the Menkiti Group, purchased a 9,612-square-foot lot with a vacant single-family house on it and razed the structure to build the modern 25-unit apartment building. The development includes local rental supplement program funds, which are project-based housing vouchers for 100 percent of the units. The residents will pay 30 percent of their income.

The development will include free covered parking, a laundry facility and resident and supportive service, including more than 1,800 square feet of community space with a demonstration kitchen, a yoga studio, a library and a card room on each floor.
