Housing in the District is notoriously expensive, with the median price up 7.7 percent in November to $527,500. Finding an affordable home with the space and amenities you want can be difficult, particular if you would like to live within the city limits and still enjoy a yard.

This week’s Affordable Home of the Week is a single-family home at 3717 Camden St. SE in the Hillcrest neighborhood.

The Hillcrest Community Civic Association says the neighborhood is attractive, with single-family homes nestled among trees, parks and green spaces just three miles from the Capitol. The neighborhood offers a suburban vibe but has good bus transit to downtown D.C. and to the Potomac Avenue Metro station. Former mayor Vincent C. Gray lives in Hillcrest, which is known for its strong sense of community with frequent block parties.

The home, priced at $400,000, rests on one of the larger lots in the community with nearly one-third of an acre including an extensive back yard. The home has more than 1,300 square feet with three bedrooms, three baths and original architectural details, such as arched windows and doorways and a fireplace with a raised hearth.

The two-level dwelling has a glass-enclosed porch, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a den and a game or exercise room. The upper level has three bedrooms and a family room. The home, built in 1928, has a new roof and is being sold as-is. Buyers can live in the house right now or update the property before moving.
