The nation’s capital may be better known for bureaucracy and traditional architecture, but it’s also got an edge over other cities when it comes to interior design.

A recent survey by Joybird, an online provider of custom-designed furniture, found that Washington tops the list as the best city for interior design.

You may associate a contemporary residence in Los Angeles or a hip Brooklyn loft more with cutting-edge design than Washington.

While those cities are definitely hot spots for interior design, the Joybird survey uncovered some surprises: Los Angeles ranked No. 19 on its list of the best cities for interior design and New York came in No. 22.

The survey, based on data from EMSI, a labor market data services company, looked at all metro areas with a population above 1 million. The cities are ranked on these five factors:

•  Interior designers per capita (both self-employed and salaried).

•  Percent of self-employed interior designers.

•  Median hourly earnings.

• Number of furnishings and decor stores per capita.

• Percent growth in the number of interior school graduates from 2013 to 2016.

One reason Washington ranked at the top is that it has the highest-paid interior designers. The other nine top cities are: Jacksonville, Miami, Seattle, St. Louis, Boston, Atlanta, Orlando, San Francisco and Salt Lake City.

The reason Jacksonville came in second is that it had a 317 percent growth rate of interior designers, higher than any other city.
