If your dream home features a large green lawn and mature trees, you may be exceeding your budget if you want to live in the District or sought-after nearby neighborhoods such as Arlington or Bethesda. Savvy home buyers are catching on to the fact that their dollars can go further in Prince George’s County, particularly if they want to cap their home price at $400,000.

For example, the single-family house at 1411 Perrell Lane in Bowie, priced at $329,000, rests on a nearly half-acre lot. Annual taxes are $3,912. The two-level house in the Pointer Ridge neighborhood has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and nearly 1,700 finished square feet.

Built in 1969, the house has been updated with an expanded kitchen with large windows and a sliding-glass door to a low-maintenance deck. The house has a master bedroom on the main level that includes French doors to the deck and a remodeled bathroom. In addition, the house has a new roof, a new heating and air conditioning system, wood floors on the upper level, ceramic tile flooring on the main level, gas heat, central air conditioning and an attached two-car garage.

Assigned public schools, each of which earns a 5 or 6 out of 10 from GreatSchools.org, which is average to above-average, are Pointer Ridge Elementary, Benjamin Tasker Middle and Bowie High.
