The transformation of Tysons Corner from an office-and-shopping area to several pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods has already increased the number of people who live there.
Plans call for Tysons to be home to 100,000 people by 2050; the area had just 20,000 residents in 2010. To meet the desire for a true neighborhood that functions well for all ages, an independent living community for elderly people has been added to plans for Tysons.
Mather LifeWays, a Chicago-based organization recently announced a proposal to build the Mather, a “life plan community” for people 62 and older. A life plan community focuses on amenities conducive to an active retirement or pre-retirement lifestyle as well as access to a continuum of living options including assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing suites, along with health plan options.
“The Mather was originally slated to be office buildings, but amending the plan to become an independent living community gives older adults the opportunity to live in a maintenance-free, walkable area,” says Donna Shafer, a managing director of Cityline Partners in Tysons Corner.
Some of the one- and two-bedroom units will have a den. The Mather will offer a variety of dining options within the building and a fitness center and spa with a swimming pool, steam showers and an exercise studio. Residents can participate in a variety of activities such as workshops, lectures, art and technology seminars and live musical performances.
Mather residents can also take advantage of 24-hour concierge services, valet parking, shuttle transportation and a nearby Metro station. Optional services include dining packages, housecleaning, maintenance and landscaping.
The Mather is anticipated to open in 2022. Pricing, which has yet to be determined, will depend on the size and location of the apartment and the service package and health plan selections. Residents will pay a one-time entrance fee, 90 percent refundable to the resident or resident’s estate as well as a monthly service fee.
