When the median sales price for a home in the District reached $550,000 in October, according to the Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors, buyers with a maximum budget of $400,000 realized their home search would be tough.

Those looking for a single-family house face a challenge. But it’s not impossible to reach your goal as long as you’re willing to look in neighborhoods farther from hip and hot H Street corridor or Shaw.

For example, the single-family house at 4943 A St. SE in the District’s Marshall Heights neighborhood is priced at $349,999. Annual property taxes are $1,681. The house was originally listed at $414,901.

Built in 1942, this three-story house has 1,800 square feet with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a fully finished basement with a washer and dryer and storage. All four bedrooms and two full bathrooms are on the upper level. The house has been well-maintained and has wood and tile floors as well as carpet. The kitchen has stainless-steel appliances and a center island. The house includes a deck and a back yard with grass.

Assigned schools include Nalle Elementary, rated above average by GreatSchools.org, Kelly Miller Middle, which is rated below average, and H.D. Woodson High, rated average.
