It can be tough to find a home to buy for less than $400,000 in the high-priced Washington region when you’re looking for a place within walking distance of a Metro station and you need multiple bedrooms.

Buyers who want city amenities such as public transit but not city prices have discovered that Prince George’s County, particularly near Hyattsville, can be a good option.

For example, the single-family house at 5706 31st Ave. in Hyattsville, less than a half-mile from the Prince George’s Plaza and West Hyattsville Metro stations, is priced at $400,000. Property taxes are $3,983 annually.

The 1,224-square-foot house, built in 1940, has been renovated and includes six bedrooms and four bathrooms. The house has two master bedrooms — each with a private full bathroom — plus a third bedroom and a third full bathroom. The finished attic level can function as a fourth bedroom, while the finished lower level includes an in-law suite with a second kitchen, two more bedrooms and another full bathroom. The main kitchen has been updated with granite counters, a breakfast bar and stainless-steel appliances.

The price of the house was dropped from its original listed price of $440,000.

Assigned schools include Edward M. Felegy Elementary, Nicholas Orem Middle and Northwestern High. The elementary school is not rated by GreatSchools.org. The middle and high schools are rated below average based on test scores.
