Amenities such as fitness centers and swimming pools are expected in upscale apartments.

Dog-lovers also look for pet-friendly buildings, but not every rental development takes pet-friendliness to the level of the Thornton, the new 439-unit waterfront apartment building at 1199 S. Washington St. in Alexandria. The building includes a dog-grooming salon, and property managers organize pet-friendly events and activities such as “Mutts and Mimosas” for residents and their pets.

The Thornton, developed by Foulger-Pratt, sits on Hunting Creek near the Potomac River and is close to the Mount Vernon Trail and numerous other trails. Other amenities include multiple lounges with fireplaces and work spaces, a coffee station, a library, parking, and entertainment spaces indoors and outside.

Renters can choose among more than 50 floor plans, which include a mix of studios with 437 to 540 square feet; one-bedroom apartments with 665 to 809 square feet; and two-bedroom apartments with 967 to 1,177 square feet.

Rents range from $1,612 to $2,881.

The apartments have quartz countertops, walk-in closets, a washer and dryer, and flooring that looks like wood. Some include private balconies.
