Wizards vs Pacers: Game 76 Discussion Thread

The Wizards will seek to extend their home winning streak to nine games as they host the Indiana Pacers on Saturday at Verizon Center, but the game will take somewhat of a backseat to a halftime ceremony honoring the 1978 NBA champion Washington Bullets.

Bullet legends Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, Bobby Dandridge, Kevin Grevey, Phil Chenier, Tom Henderson, Joe Pace, Phil Walker and Larry Wright, former coach Dick Motta and former general manager Bob Ferry will be among those in attendance as the franchise recognizes its lone title team while raising a new banner.

“It’s a big honor. No matter. The only championship that this organization has won, so you’ve got to give a lot of respect to those guys,” John Wall said before the game. “You don’t want to lose on this type of night, when a team like that is getting recognized. You got to show a lot of love and support and I hope they get a big standing ovation.”

None of the players on the current Wizards’ roster were alive when the Bullets won the championship, but Coach Randy Wittman has vivid memories of watching the series on tape delay in Indianapolis.

“I remember watching them when I was graduating from high school, back in the day. It’s a special night for these guys, obviously. It’s always nice to reminisce,” Wittman said. “We talked about it last night. It’s kind of a neat situation and it’s why we’re in the game, to try to do what these guys did. What these guys accomplished in 1978, to win a championship.”
