Glen Rice Jr. rejoined the Wizards on Saturday after completing a lengthy second stint with the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League.

The Wizards recalled Rice, a 6-foot-6 rookie swingman, after he averaged 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in 16 games to help the Energy clinch the Central Division title.

“It’s time to get him back up here,” Coach Randy Wittman said.

Rice was sent down to the D-League for a second time on Feb. 26 to get some playing time. The 35th overall pick last June, Rice hasn’t appeared in an NBA game since a 113-97 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Dec. 14. He had surgery to repair a fractured right wrist four days later and missed a month before sent down to Iowa for a three-game rehabilitation stint.

Bradley Beal, Trevor Ariza and Martell Webster have hogged the minutes for perimeter players and Andre Miller has also shared some time in the back court with John Wall, creating a situation in which third overall pick Otto Porter Jr. has received limited playing time. Rice’s role won’t change now that he’s returned but Wittman believes that the experience of being around a playoff team could be beneficial.

“He was down there for a stint of games. Get him back with the team, mainly,” Wittman said.

Rice has appeared in 11 NBA games, including one start, and averages 2.9 points for the Wizards (40-37).

In two stints with the Energy, spanning 19 games, Rice averaged 17.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.7 steals in 28 minutes. He had five 20-point games, reaching a season-high 29 points twice, and also recorded four double-doubles. He shot 46.4 percent from the field (109 of 235) and 35.1 percent from three-point range (39 for 111).
