By now you've certainly had time to read through Medicare's 163,000-line spreadsheet that lists thousands of hospitals' prices for the 100 most common procedures, right?
Never fear: The very smart folks in our graphics department have turned that big pile of data into an easily searchable database. You can look up your own hospital and compare it to other ones nearby. So, take it for a whirl:
One point to keep in mind: While these figures represent what hospitals charge, they don't necessarily show what hospitals get paid. Medicare only reimburses, on average, one-third of what hospitals bill. Private health insurance plans set their own rates with these providers.
These numbers, though, could matter for the uninsured, who don't have an insurance plan to negotiate a better price. They could end up with the charges that you see above, which vary widely from hospital to hospital.
