Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 is a daily flight running from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. In the wake of the tragic crash Thursday over Eastern Ukraine, presumably due to a missile attack, Malaysia Airlines has said it will no longer fly over Ukrainian airspace and instead route planes south through Turkey. Many other airlines are doing the same.
Malaysia Air will likely retire the call sign for Flight 17, as it did for Flight 370. But for now Flight 17 is still an active daily flight. Data from aviation firm FlightAware shows that the plane is currently in the air and over Romanian airspace, south of Ukraine.
Prospective passengers may be skittish about flying Malaysia Air in the coming months, given the two recent high-profile tragedies the airline has suffered. But today, at least, some hearty travelers were willing to board a flight carrying the same call sign as the plane that crashed Thursday.
