These days, the number of images of our planet being captured from space is growing at astronomical rates.

There are over 1,260 satellites over Earth, and 300 of those are focused on taking images of our planet. But only one satellite is continuously manned. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have been capturing pictures with handheld cameras since November 2000. Orbiting between 220-286 miles above the Earth at an average speed of 17,227 miles per hour, the ISS makes multiple orbits around the Earth every day. The images that are captured can be viewed here.

Some of the most captivating images are those taken at night where the bright urban areas create a unique shape in contrast to its' surrounding areas that are in the dark. While the orbit location of the ISS is known when the photo is taken, the places on earth for most of the archive are not cataloged, which can lead to some fun geo-sleuthing.

Can you guess which North American cities these are? Remember north is not necessarily up in space, but we've added a directional arrow to get your better situated. Good luck!
