The Pope is now, to much fanfare, on Twitter. The effort behind the @Pontifex Twitter feed is an elaborate one, the Post's Cecilia Kang reports, and the team takes its mission seriously. So that would seem to make Pope Benedict XVI's fourth-ever tweet all the more significant:

To be fair, it seems more likely that he's raising a question he suspects may be on the minds of his followers than that he's asserting the lack of hope on Earth. And he followed his question with an answer:

A Twitter employee "has been in Rome for the past week," Kang reports, "to make sure the holiest of new members, @pontifex, becomes a social-media success."
