NSA leaker Edward Snowden held a meeting today at Terminal F in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, where he has been living since arriving from Hong Kong in late June, to announce that he would seek asylum in Russia.

The scene at Snowden's meeting, like the international politics that got him there, was at turns strange and boisterous. Human rights workers, Russian government officials and a scrum of reporters jockeyed outside the apparently small room where the meeting was held, discussing the asylum application that may ultimately come down to whether Snowden can meet conditions articulated earlier by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
