As news of Abbott's likely ouster spread on Monday, Australian social media users decided to pay tribute to their soon-to-be-ex-leader in an unusual way – by posting photographs of onions.
The Twitter hashtag #putoutyouronions soon trended in Australia, with over 7,000 tweets in the past 24 hours. The format of the hashtag appeared to be based upon the tributes shown to Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes last year. Hughes, who died after being hit by a ball during a game, was honored by social media users who posted images of their cricket bats.
Unfortunately for Abbott, the tributes to the ex-prime minister do not seem to be quite as sincere. Instead, they refer to a notorious incident earlier this year when the Australian leader was pictured biting into and eating a raw onion, skin and all, during a trip to a farm in Tasmania.
It's perhaps a fitting tribute for Abbott, who during less than two years in office became better known for his gaffes than his policies.
