TOKYO – Japan is renowned for its unusual flavor combinations. Take the purple sweet potato Kit Kat as Exhibit A and the curry donut as Exhibit B.

Now Calbee, the Japanese snack maker, has joined forces with game company Namco to produce a new flavor sensation: the cola chip. Yes, you read that right. A potato chip that tastes like a fizzy soda drink.

These delights, which took Calbee eight months to perfect, are available as prizes in Namco crane games at arcades. But Calbee kindly sent a box of the chips to the Washington Post so we could put them to the test.

The Post's Anna Fifield asks people to try the new, cola-flavored potato chips released in Tokyo, Japan. The taste testers had mixed reviews. (Jason Aldag/The Washington Post)
