As the Sept. 12 front-page article “House GOP pushes vote on budget to next week” noted, for the third straight year we are threatened with a government shutdown and possibly a national default on our debt. I have never spoken to an American of any point of view who supports either of these outcomes.

Americans want to use the services of the agencies that they pay for, and they are entitled to use them without interruption. The greatest nation on Earth defaulting on its debt is simply irresponsible. All this posturing does is scare our senior citizens.

The cause du jour is evidently the Affordable Care Act (affectionately known as Obamacare) — a law passed by Congress, signed by the president and vetted by the highest court in the United States. I suspect it will be amended over time. That is the appropriate process for making changes to the law. The group of ideologues threatening our country for their favorite pet peeve need to get over it and get on with the business of running things.
