I believe Sally Jenkins confused the words “oppose” and “respect” in her June 15 Sports column, “Take a stand? NBA champs should visit D.C., shake president’s hand.” I can oppose someone or his goals, but I still can shake his hand out of respect. On the other hand, if I do not respect the person, it would be hypocritical of me to shake that person’s hand, no matter if I opposed or supported his political actions. While a position a person occupies may indeed demand my respect, the person’s actions and words can demand that I disrespect him personally. Shaking hands is a personal thing.
More specifically, on the question of whether the Golden State Warriors should visit the White House if invited, perhaps the White House and the Warriors could issue a joint statement saying that both feel that such silliness as championship teams getting/providing photo ops at the White House is not a priority for either institution.
