Montgomery County Council member Phil Andrews (D-Gaithersburg-Rockville) presented good reasons why excessive pay increases for public employees, proposed by County Executive Isiah Leggett (D), are unrealistic [“Montgomery County can’t afford these pay raises,” letters, April 20]. Citizens know that new taxes, fees and cost-of-living increases will directly affect family budgets, especially those of seniors on fixed incomes. Mr. Andrews’s wise counterproposal would give county employees two things they deserve: pay raises and lower energy taxes.
