A portrait of George Washington is displayed in Maurertown, Va. (Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg)

The July 1 Outlook feature regarding George Washington’s rules of civility, “How uncivilized,” implied that the rules were written by our first president. The feature should have attributed the authorship to the French Jesuits who composed them in 1595. They were translated into English in 1640 and copied by a young Washington for his personal guidance.
