After the heartbreaking tragedy of Newtown, Conn., the National Rifle Association (NRA) said we didn’t need an assault-weapons ban or limits on ammunition magazines to protect our children. Instead, said the NRA (and the politicians beholden to it), we needed armed security guards in each school. Well, Monday’s tragedy at the Navy Yard showed us what having armed guards does: Nothing. It neither deterred this killer nor prevented his slaughter. As The Post reported [“Rampage at Navy Yard,” front-page, Sept. 17], when the killer encountered an armed guard, he shot him, took his gun and continued with his killing. When will our leaders have the moral courage to do the only sensible thing left to do — enact sensible gun control?
