The Dec. 24 editorial “Standing up for Syria?” asked whether, with its policy on Syria, the Obama administration is “standing up for our interests.” Without doubt, one dimension of it certainly does: the agreement reached this year to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons and ability to produce more. Such weapons in the hands of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad or his likely successors is not a pretty picture for Syrians, others in the Middle East or humanity.

Rather than dwelling on what the administration has not done in Syria, it would be more constructive for The Post to advocate for continued diplomacy or other actions that build on this tangible and significant step in the right direction.
