The most alarming part of the Dec. 4 front-page article “ Trying to slow down D.C.’s game of transfers ,” on the state of high school athletics in the District, was not that students are transferring to different schools for athletic purposes or that coaches bend the rules to gain an advantage over the competition. It was a quote attributed to a young high school football player: “I gotta do what I gotta do. Football is a business.”

Only a small percentage of high school football players will go on to play at the collegiate level, and only a very small percentage of those will play in the pros. If District-area high school athletes want to go into business, they might be better served spending less time thinking about the gridiron and more time on math, science, reading and writing.
