According to the April 23 front-page article “A new library and a new assessment,” former president George W. Bush’s approval ratings are up as his library is about to open. That is not unusual. Such ratings often rise once presidents leave office — out of sight, out of mind.
But nothing changes the fact that Mr. Bush was one of the worst presidents in U.S. history, and no amount of right-wing spin can change his wretched performance as president.
Look at his record: On Aug. 6, 2001, Mr. Bush was handed a briefing that said al-Qaeda was going to attack on U.S. soil, and he did nothing. He used weapons of mass destruction as a phony excuse to invade Iraq. He inherited a booming economy with surpluses, but his unnecessary tax cuts and unfunded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan turned the surplus into record deficits and created the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
