Both the front-page article “ Parents’ pain is magnified by China’s one-child rule ” [Aug. 9] and a follow-up letter [“ The loneliness of the one-child rule ,” Aug. 13] focused only on the personal pain that some people experience under China’s one-child policy. Yes, couples have to sacrifice under the policy. And, in certain instances, implementation of the policy has been excessively harsh. But without such sacrifice, China’s amazing economic advances would not have been possible. Most Americans are in denial over the suffering caused by population growth. While the instances of excessive harshness deserve censure, China’s courage in addressing the issue of overpopulation deserves our respect.
