Count me as one more grateful parent who, by the purest dumb luck, was able to tuck my children safely into bed Friday night.

Count me also as one who will no longer tolerate the status quo, in which our mentally ill are not properly cared for and weapons of war are sold to civilians with virtually no accountability.

Finally, count me as a citizen who will no longer cede the peace and well-being of my community to those whose volume rises in inverse proportion to their numbers and reason.

We have traveled far down the road of looser restrictions on firearms and a laissez-faire attitude toward mental illness. The results demand a new direction and, if necessary, new leaders to take us there.
