Bil and Jeff Keane’s April 20 Family Circus cartoon was obviously intended to send a positive message about the use of seat belts, which I would normally applaud. What a shame, though, that the actual image could be used as a class project for how not to secure your child in a car.

The child shown is seated in the front passenger seat with only a seat belt. A child that size should be in a booster seat in the back seat, experts recommend. At least in Maryland, it would be illegal for a child to ride as depicted because it is unsafe.
