I recently arrived at Dulles International Airport from India. I’ve entered the United States from European, Asian and South American destinations and have experienced passport control in a number of countries. Entering through our nation’s capital was unique. Never have I been through a passport control process as slow as the one at Dulles. An hour and a half my wife and I stood in line for the processing of a single plane — and 25 percent of the passengers were behind us. Movement in the “non-U.S. citizen” line was equally slow. I wondered at the impression we make on visitors.
