The government figures quoted in the Jan. 8 news article “More opting for ‘shotgun cohabitation’ ” show hopeful signs that more children will be raised in two-parent families, whether the parents are married or not. But we also learned that the “National Survey of Family Growth . . . provides the only government data on cohabiting mothers.”
According to the article, it’s the mothers who decide to “move in with their boyfriends.” The mothers who “spur increases in out-of-wedlock births.” Education levels in the story refer only to mothers. Even ongoing relationships between the parents are mentioned in terms of mothers.
How sad. Cohabitation involves two people. It may be easier for researchers to track mothers, but if we expect men to claim their children and be parents to them, their participation in the family should be fully acknowledged and reported.
