Regarding the April 17 front-page article “Panetta says he regrets cost of his flights home”:

I can’t help but wonder why the family of Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta doesn’t do what nearly every military family does: Relocate with the active-duty member or wait to be reunited when his or her assignment is over. It is an expected (and remarkable) sacrifice that military families routinely make.

Mr. Panetta is no longer a member of Congress representing California. There is no reason why he should maintain his principal residence in that state when he has such tremendous responsibility in Washington.
