In the Jan. 5 editorial “A slow-motion conflagration,” The Post, as usual, made a good argument for not ignoring the civil war in Syria and the related conflict in Iraq but offered little in the way of concrete actions that President Obama could take. What, exactly, does The Post want him to do? Put troops back in Iraq? For how long? We would have to withdraw them again at some point. Bomb Syria? The American public, and most of the rest of the world, is dead-set against that. Supply arms to the rebels in Syria or the Iraqi government? How would the United States keep them from falling into the wrong hands?

Here’s the bottom line: The United States cannot get involved in another endless war in the Middle East, especially one that, from all appearances, is being fought over who is the rightful heir to Muhammad.
