Every country needs to swap fossil fuels for renewable energy, which is perhaps why people wouldn't expect one nation to have such a stranglehold over the materials that are going to be increasingly important. China has a head start on every country, including the United States, in part because of the relationships it has built with countries in Africa where important metals and minerals are mined.
