It is hard not to see the irony in Israel’s refusal to provide a home to the many African migrants seeking refuge from famine and war [“Not their promised land,” front page, Dec. 21]. It was 74 years ago that the ship the St. Louis, with more than 900 Jews aboard, unsuccessfully sought refuge from the Nazis. Nobody would take them in, either.

I can’t believe we humans haven’t learned to be compassionate. Instead, we continue to send the immoral message that there is no room for people trying to keep themselves and their families from being mutilated or killed.
